Defensive end Chris Long was ejected in the third quarter for throwing a punch during a brawl. The worst blow of the day came when quarterback Sam Bradford suffered what appears to be a significant left knee injury with 5 minutes to play in the fourth quarter. On second and 10 from the Carolina 37, Bradford scrambled to his right and attempted to run out of bounds at the 36. He was shoved hard near the sideline by Panthers safety Mike Mitchell, landing awkwardly out of bounds on his left knee.It was clear immediately that Bradford was injured, and perhaps badly injured. While Bradford was writhing in pain on the ground, Mitchell "celebrated" his achievement by sticking his chest out and raising his arms to the air in triumph just a few feet from where Bradford was on the ground. That was enough for starting right guard Harvey Dahl. He raced over and accosted Mitchell. Dahl's anger grew when he checked on Bradford and saw how much pain he was in on the ground. Dahl, turned, raced back out on the field toward Mitchell and started shoving him again, and was flagged for a personal foul."I'm not going to speculate (on Bradford's injury)," coach Jeff Fisher said at his postgame news conference. "I'm not going to deal with hypotheticals until I really find out what's going on with the injury."But Rams players were bracing for the worst after Bradford was carted off the field, and then was seen on crutches once he reached the visitors' locker room at Bank of America Stadium. He was wearing what appeared to be an immobilizing brace on the left knee."I'm hurting now from (from Bradford's injury)," wide receiver Brian Quick said with a big sigh after the game. "I hate to see any of my teammates go down. I'm gonna pray everything's OK.""It's heartbreaking, man," said linebacker James Laurinaitis. "To see how hard Sam prepares . first in, last out, and to truly become the leader on that side of the ball, it's heartbreaking to see him go down."Bradford finished with 21 completions in 30 attempts for 255 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. His passer rating was 93.1. He had a 63 yard touchdown pass to Tavon Austin called back because of a tripping penalty against Rams left tackle Jake Long in the second quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Quick dropped what would've been a 24 yard TD reception in the end zone.Backup quarterback Kellen Clemens finished out the game for Bradford and would take over for him as the starter at least in the short term starting with the team's Monday nighter Oct. 28 against Seattle."Sam believes in us just like we believed in him," offensive tackle Rodger Saffold said. "And we're gonna believe in Kellen, too. So whatever happens and wherever we're at, we are gonna play till the end of the whistle."One of the team's problems Sunday was that it did too much after the whistle. It all started when with just under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton completed an 11 yard pass to tight end Greg Olsen.Back downfield, behind the line of scrimmage, a scuffle ensued between Carolina left tackle Jordan Gross and Rams defensive end Robert Quinn. Several other Panthers got in on the scuffle, then the rest of the Rams' defense came to Quinn's aid.Referee Bill Vinovich's crew couldn't control the situation. The fracas continued for a couple of minutes, with at least a couple of dozen players pushing and shoving. Then Chris Long threw a punch in the direction of Panthers right guard Chris Scott, and was ejected. Carolina players celebrated Long's dismissal on the field as if they had just won the Super Bowl, but they were not flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. With all that in mind, it was surprising to hear Fisher say after the game: "I thought the crew did a pretty good job getting things under control. I'm disappointed that Chris made the decision that he did. He suffered the consequences. He shouldn't put himself in a position where he's watching the game from the locker room. He should be on the field. And he understands that."Long declined to discuss specifics of the ruckus, and his punch, but did apologize for his actions."I just apologize for losing my cool," he said. "I don't want to hurt my football teams, but I just stick up for my teammates. . ."That was wrong. I need to be more composed. When you play with a lot of emotion, there's a fine line between being over the line and reeling it back in. So I need to reel it back in. The game meant a lot and there were a lot of situations where we probably let them get the best of us in situations where we needed to reel it in."Fisher thought the start of scuffle was a Carolina attempt to retaliate for a hard hit by Quinn on a play that took place two plays earlier. Newton handed off DeAngelo Williams on the play, but it was with read option action. As Quinn approached Newton's back, he couldn't tell if the Newton still had the ball or had handed it off. So he tackled Newton _ a perfectly legal play."He's a big guy, athletic quarterback," Quinn said. "If he'd have spun out and thrown a touchdown or ran for whatever _ my job was to take the quarterback if they're were to do a play like that. And that's all I did."Newton was shaken up on the play but not John Wall Navy Jersey injured. Beginning with the brawl that led to Long's ejection, things were ultra chippy the rest of the way. More often than not, it was the Rams who got caught and were penalized reacting to a push or a shove.
